Template or generator?
Use the template when you are working on paper, in the field, or you want to hand-write amounts and sign in person. Use the generator when you want the totals calculated for you, a sequential receipt number, and a PDF you can email in the same minute. Both are free.
Country notes
| United Kingdom | If you are VAT-registered you must show your VAT number and, for VAT receipts, the rate and amount of VAT. Keep copies for 6 years. UK businesses commonly issue a receipt even when not VAT-registered — just omit the VAT lines. |
|---|---|
| United States | Federal law does not require a consumer receipt, but sales tax must be shown separately where it applies, and records must support your tax return. Show the state sales tax line separately — that is what auditors look for. |
| Canada | GST/HST registrants must show the GST/HST number and the amount of tax once the total reaches the small-supplier receipt threshold. Use your 9-digit business number with the RT0001 suffix. |
| Australia | Tax invoices for sales of $82.50 or more (including GST) need the words 'Tax invoice', your ABN, the buyer's identity, and the GST amount. A receipt under $82.50 can be simpler — but a compliant tax invoice saves a re-issue later. |
